School Subjects and Like and Dislike Nouns

Like/dislike

To say that you like something in Japanese, start with the noun of the thing that you like and add が すきです。on the end.

すき can be written in kanji 好き

It’s made up of two radicals.

Why do you think that when they get combined to make one new kanji character, the meaning becomes “like”/”to be fond of”.

Picture

The sentence with the kanji character being used becomes:

       ________が 好きです。           I like __________.

To ask someone if they like something you say: …..が好きですか。

You can see that it’s the same sentence pattern but at the end there’s a か (?)

To answer you would first say either yes  (はい) or no (いいえ) and then you might go on to explain the degree to which you like or don’t like it.

Different degrees of liking things

I love ….                                    ___が 大好き です。
I like ….                                     ___が 好き です。
I don’t like ….. much.             ___が あんまり 好きじゃないです。
I don’t like …..                          ___が 好きじゃない です。
I hate …..                                   ___が きらい です。
